Functional Behavior Assessment & Behavior Intervention Planning Training
Moving Function-Based Plan Development Lower in the Triangle
Description
In many schools, Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans are introduced only after behavior has escalated to the point of requiring intensive support. By then, key opportunities for early, effective intervention have already been missed, and these plans often feel disconnected from daily practice.
This Foundational FBA/BIP experience focuses on bringing clarity and consistency to how teams understand and respond to behavior. Rather than waiting for challenges to intensify, participants learn how to use function-based thinking earlier in the process to truly prevent the need for more intensive supports. Participants will strengthen their ability to conduct Functional Behavior Assessments, develop meaningful Behavior Intervention Plans, and apply this thinking to lower-level and emerging behaviors, not just the most intensive cases.
Even for those who have been trained in FBA/BIP before, this experience offers a different approach. It is designed to be accessible, collaborative, and usable across staff, so the work is not just understood, but consistently applied in everyday practice.
Who Should Attend
This experience is designed for systems leaders and implementer leaders who are responsible for supporting student behavior and are looking to strengthen their use of function-based thinking within their school or organization.
Implementer Leaders
Those who will be facilitating or actively engaged in the FBA/BIP process, including educators, clinicians, behavior specialists, coaches, and related service providers
Systems Leaders
Those in positions to shape structures, priorities, and long-term direction, including district and building administrators, coordinators, and coaches
This training is appropriate for those who are new to function-based thinking as well as those who have been engaging in FBA/BIP work for years. Even experienced practitioners will benefit from building a shared language and a more consistent, system-wide approach to this work.
Goals and Objectives
By the end of the series, participants will:
- Develop a strong understanding of function-based thinking and how it applies across all tiers of support
- Learn how to conduct Functional Behavior Assessments by gathering meaningful information and understanding what is driving student behavior
- Learn how to facilitate Behavior Intervention Plan development meetings that result in clear, practical, and functionally aligned plans
- Strengthen their ability to support educators and teams in responding to lower-level and emerging behaviors using functionally appropriate strategies
- Understand team roles and responsibilities, and how data is used to monitor both implementation and student outcomes over time
- Begin identifying the systems and structures needed to move from problem-solving conversations to a clear, function-based process that can be implemented consistently over time
All while engaging in collaborative learning, reflection, and application with others doing this work.
Community of Practice Booster Sessions
Participation in the Foundational FBA/BIP Training Series includes two additional Community of Practice sessions with the AHCC Team.
These sessions are designed to support continued growth and implementation by:
- Providing a space to review and refine real plans, with a focus on what it looks like to develop and implement plans with fidelity
- Supporting participants in applying what they have learned within their own settings, including how to bring function-based thinking lower in the system so more staff can use it proactively
- Creating opportunities to learn from the experiences, challenges, and successes of others
- Extending learning through additional content, reflection, and guided support
